Take me out to the ballgame…

Dear sis,

Tonight, I interviewed a ten year old boy for Make A Wish.    His wish is to meet this very famous baseball player.

He told me that he has played baseball for 7 years.  He also proudly mentioned that 4 of those 7 years,  included rep.    He is a second base player and pitcher.

When I asked what his favourite movie was he said, “Sandlot.”  He tried to explain the premise of the movie.  However, it was very touching when his dad apologetically interrupted and said,” It is really about a group of boys coming together for the love of a sport.  Baseball.   Kids with all different backgrounds and situations.”  I knew exactly how special this movie was.

I did the interview in Starbucks.  His three year old sister pushed around her little baby stroller that I had just given her.    Make A Wish always ensures that when we meet a family, we don’t just focus on the MAW child.  We include all siblings.

This young boy told me what his favourite food is,  what colour he likes however what I picked up on most was his spirit.   He was handling life in a way that was so brilliant.

His parents were such beautiful people.  The way they looked at their son, broke my heart.  It took me everything not to cry in that interview.

When I interview a child, I don’t want to make promises.  Especially with “Celebrity wishes”.    However, he knew how excited I was about his wish.  He quoted, “I can’t even wrap my brain around that this may happen.”

As I was about to leave, I said to him, “OK, we are going to make this happen.  Well I should say, we will do our best to make this happen.  I don’t want to get too overly optimistic.”  He responded, “Why….why would you not ALWAYS want to be overly optimistic.”  I looked at him and said, “You are right.  Let’s be optimistic together on this.   When I go out on my paddle board tonight and the sun starts to set,  I will think of your wish.  I am going to send out positive energy to the Universe.”

Here’s to that very special little boy I met today.  A boy whom is filled with so much love, strength and optimism.

It doesn’t really matter what age you are, it really is the life experiences – good and bad – that make you who you are today.

Let’s play ball !!!

I love you sis,

Kathy xo
